Swiss National Museum, Zurich, Switzerland
The extension to the museum (which includes reception areas, library, and temporary exhibition space) is housed in cubic structures, predominantly golden in colour, freely arranged in the museum park and courtyard near the river. A continuous underground level under the courtyard distributes the circulation efficiently, with exhibition areas benefiting from natural sunlight through glass shards scattered over the floor. The breakdown of the programme into several independent units characterised by stylistic simplicity and refinement creates an interesting contrast with the late 19th-centry architecture of the existing building in the backdrop.
