New theatre and renovation of the Opera, Cologne, Germany
The city of Cologne launched an ambitious extension project to refurbish the 1950s Opera house, a listed historical building, coupled with the construction of a theatre house. The new public facility, the same height as the existing opera house, is made up of nested volumes that reveal its interior structure. This formal principle governs the density. The performance space, the rehearsal studio and the children's opera are connected in the basement to the costume and stage set workshops, to accommodate theatrical performances and related services. A restaurant offers a panoramic view of the Opera House and the city center.
